Amazing Teacher Created Lesson Plans for Elements 4D

Cover of the elementary lesson plans for Elements 4D

Since its launch on Kickstarter in 2013, Elements 4D has generated a new level of excitement in chemistry classrooms across the country. Bringing the elements of the Periodic Table to life, Elements 4D creates an engaging, one of a kind learning experience. Students can safely observe harmful elements, like Plutonium, Uranium and Xenon, and witness in stunning 4D how they chemically react with other elements, providing students with a visual knowledge-transfer that was once impossible. Elements 4D is like a portable lab.
While many teachers have created their own lesson plans around this 4D teaching tool, there hasn’t been an official curriculum released… until now.

Embracing Change, Are You?

Reflecting back to this summer, Drew and I arrived in Atlanta, Georgia for ISTE 2014.  ISTE is the International Society for Technology in Education and it is the world’s largest Educational Technology Conference.  This is where we get a chance to Evangelize for Augmented Reality in Education on the world’s largest stage.  It’s the Super Bowl of Educational Technology Conferences and we were ready for Round 2!

When we touched down at the airport we had only two things on our minds.  One, our panel discussion Sunday morning, with Angela Maiers, Steve Mesler and Todd Nesloney and two - heading to the Blogger’s Café to blow minds with the latest and greatest educational augmented reality content, challenge thinking and challenge the current model of education.

You see, Drew and I love showcasing the latest in Augmented Reality and putting the education world on its’ ear!

We like to go out, share the amazing technology and challenge educators to embrace change to maximize their impact on students. We ask them to use the power of Augmented Reality and the latest 21C technology to engage kids and truly integrate it into the culture of learning.

I always ask,  “Why are we still educating kids like we did in the 50’s?”  The 50’s were great and sometimes I wish they were still here, but the world has changed since then.

The days of being a “know-it-all” and the Supreme Holder of Information are gone and a new day has dawned! A world where collaboration is expected, failure happens and the age of creativity is back!  We, as educators, can change our approach to educating kids and work with them in today’s world.

Take a moment and think about where you stand on the Teaching Continuum and challenge yourself to move along the continuum and be an even more amazing teacher than you already are.

You can do it, #IBelieve #YouCan #MakeADifference #Today

That is our mission.  To change the way we Learn, the way we Teach and the way we Lead.  This is our journey.  Please join us

Have an amazing day,

Brad Waid

5 Design Tools to Spark Imagination and Promote Creativity

One of my favorite things about working with students is their ability to routinely blow my mind. Amazing things happen when students are given the opportunity to use their imagination, and think outside the box with no fear of failure. Give your students access to the 5 tools below, and let them blow your mind!

Tinkercad
3D Modeling is a very difficult skill to learn. Believe me, I've spent many hours trying. That was until I discovered Tinkercad. Tinkercad is free platform from Autodesk that makes creating 3D models easy! You and your students can click on the "Learn" button at the top of the page to access great interactive tutorials. These tutorials are a step by step walk you through on how to create various designs. Once finished, Tinkercad allows you to download your creation for Minecraft, order a 3D Print, or upload it to Thingiverse. You also have the option to download your creation to 3D print in

Canva makes it easy for everyone to create like a professional graphic designer! Canva started out as web tool but recently has released their first app for the iPad. Using a drag and drop interface, you can select from a wide variety of templates with a library of over 1 million images. Canva recently introduced Design School. Design School has a large collection of design essential tutorials that guide you through the creation process. The Design School a blog with many helping posts, and a teaching materials section with lessons on different elements of graphic design. Teachers and students can use Canva to create newsletters, posters, social media posts, invitations to open house or parent/teacher conferences, presentations, and much more! I absolutely love this tool and the new app works amazing.

Pixel Press - Floors

Pixel Press Floors allows students to draw their own video game without programming! Floors is just the first of a series of apps from Pixel Press with Quest and Tracks in development for 2015.  Pixel Press has worked hard to create lesson plans that correspond to the Design Thinking Process using Pixel Press Floors in what they call the Teacher Pack. To learn more about the development of the Teacher Pack and how Floors is being used in schools, check out their blog. You can also learn more from our interview with Pixel Press's Katie Burke.

Augmented reality allows us to experience education like never before. There are many great augmented reality application out there but designing and creating meaningful learning experiences is powerful. 4D Studio for Education has a simple drag and drop interface that allows educators and students to create augmented reality experiences with ease. You can publish your creation to the DAQRI app for others to experience with no extra confusing steps or actions required. The chapter system inside of 4D Studio for Education makes it easy to design interactive experiences with multiple layers of information. The best part...it's free for K-12 educators and students! Apply here and start creating a new dimension to learning!

Modio gives you the ability to unleash your creativity and design 3D characters. Modio has a large built in library of shapes, textures,  and colors to design and personalize your character. Also included are character templates that walk you through you how to create. Full multi-touch support allows you to design and build with friends. You can modify and move each part and your finished creation can be exported to work with any desktop 3D printer. Download Modio on your iPad and start designing your character. The creators of Modio are looking for educators using their app in the classroom to provide feedback. You can see comments from educators and provide feedback here.

Post-it notes have jumped into the 21st Century and have found their place in a “digital” and “augmented” world.  Thank you Tony Vincent for sharing this with me at #MiamiDevice.

The "sticky notes" notes that have covered our refrigerators and our classrooms have re-invented themselves and I love it! Now, using the sticky notes plus app (link below), you can turn the paper notes into digital copies and manipulate them! It’s like the old video from Ah Ha, where the analog world is coming to life (youngsters, look it up, haha).

There are so many great ways to use them and we are just scratching the surface.

-Exit slips

2014 was a year to remember! Here are our top 10 blog posts from this year. Thank you for you unbelievable support!

1. 6 Platforms to Create Augmented Reality
When most people first try augmented reality(AR) in education, they start with applications that have the AR content already built into the app. Apps like AR FlashcardsPBS Kids CyberChase Shape Quest, and Crayola Color Alive have this, and are a great way to get your feet wet. As educators, we know the power of creation. Hopefully one of the following 6 platforms will help you and your students dive in to creating your own augmented reality!

2. PBS Kids make Geometry and Problem Solving FUN with Augmented Reality
This past week while I have been stuck inside thanks to massive amounts of snow and subzero temperatures, I've been searching to discover as many new augmented reality apps as I could. I have downloaded well over 20 in search for ones I could use with my students and entertain myself during snow days. I found many great augmented reality applications but the latest augmented reality application from PBS Kids stood out!

3. 5 Design Tools to Spark Imagination and Promote Creativity
One of my favorite things about working with students is their ability to routinely blow my mind. Amazing things happen when students are given the opportunity to use their imagination, and think outside the box with no fear of failure. Give your students access to the 5 tools below, and let them blow your mind!

Augmented reality(AR) has continued to gain momentum in the educational landscape over the past couple of years. These educators featured below have dove in head first using AR in their classrooms and schools. They continue to share excellent resources to help educators see how augmented reality can engage students and deepen understanding.

5. You are Not Just a Teacher!
Far too often we hear the phrase, "I'm just a teacher." I am here to tell you that I am Not Just a Teacher, and neither are you! Yes, “Teacher” may be our job title, but we are so much more than that. I am a teacher, a mentor, a friend, a voice, and even some days as an elementary teacher, I'm a doctor.

6. Anatomy 4D Update Allows Users to Explore the Human Body Like Never Before

Today DAQRI launched a major update to their popular medical education app Anatomy 4D. Version 2.0.1 comes with an all new user interface, updated models, and an added heart experience.

7. Augmented Reality Made Easy with 4D Studio Tutorials
Creating augmented reality has never been so easy until now! DAQRI 4D Studio gives educators and students the ability to easily create experiences and instantly publish them to share with the world.

8. AR Explosion - A day using a Workshop Model with Augmented Reality
The other day I was talking with my class and I asked them "What Augmented Reality do we currently use in the classroom?" In a matter of seconds my students were shouting out a ton of AR apps and the many ways we have "integrated" them into our classroom.

9. Coding in the Classroom - Beyond Cargo-Bot
Since the beginning of the year my students have embraced coding in our classroom.  It all started with our use of the iPad app Cargo Bot (see previous post of "Coding" in the classroom).  As you know we are big fans of cargo bot and speak about it in our presentations and on our show.  But, this article is going to go beyond cargo bot and explore a few other excellent coding apps for kids.

Brad and I arrive early Tuesday afternoon before our 4pm workshop "Bring Learning to Life with Augmented Reality" which focused on the process and tools to easily create meaningful learning experiences. Each attendee used 4D Studio, as well as looked at TinkercadCanva, and Thingiverse. It was exciting to see everyone get time to play with the tools and create experiences.

Wednesday started with an early visit to our friends at Winter Park High School 9th Grade Campus. It was fun to sit down with a group of students and discuss augmented reality in education. Their viewpoints, examples, and feedback was inspiring and powerful! After leaving Winter Park High School, we returned to the conference for our noon "Game Changing Apps AMPLIFIED" workshop. We like to focus on a few great apps and tools that we have used in class and know make a difference! We are always excited when those who attend our sessions have not used or heard of the tools before. Everyone was enthusiastic about implementing the apps and web tools into their classrooms.

Thursday was the day we were most excited about! We had two sessions, "Bring a New Dimension to Learning with Augmented Reality" and "Inspire Innovation by Fostering Collaboration and Creativity!" Our AR session came first and was filled with enthusiastic educators and they had the whole conference buzzing with tweets from our session. Our afternoon session "Inspire Innovation by Fostering Collaboration and Creativity!" is one of our favorites to share because it helps educators think about learning in a new way.

FETC was an extraordinary event this year and hopefully we get the chance to return next year as well! Thank you to all the educators who attended our sessions, connected with us, and inspired us!

My 2015 Apple Distinguished Educator Application Reflection

Over the course of the last month, I have worked to complete my Class of 2015 Apple Distinguished Educator Application. Getting my application selected and having the opportunity to join the Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE) Program has always been toward the very top of my professional goals. It was be a honor to collaborate with some of the greatest innovators, and thought leaders in education.

Have you ever wanted something so bad, that you actually made it harder than it needed to be? You try so hard, that you fail to meet your potential? That is how much of this process was for me. I am rarely one to overthink things. I trust my gut and go. Once I did that, I was able to create content to my self expectations. Hopefully at the end of the process, I will be able to join the Class of 2015 Apple Distinguished Educators! Good luck to all the amazing educators who submitted ADE applications.
